Julie Arkel: Textile, Stitch, and Paper Mache

I first came upon Julie Arkel’s mixed media artwork in her book about papier mâché and was immediately drawn to her combination of paper and stitching.

Arkel creates creatures from recycled paper and textiles, which she stitches and knits to dress them. Papier mâché is the latest addition to her creative world.

Arkel, born in London, U.K., began her long art career in textiles. Impressed by large Greek urns on display at the British museum, Arkel wanted to replicate the large urns by using paper. That was the start of her papier mâché mixed media work.

Nowadays, her work has evolved into making imagined creatures from fine papier-mâché and dressing them in textiles she stitches and knits.
